Manual Lymph Drainage

Gentle, specialized techniques to stimulate lymph flow, reduce swelling and help you move with greater ease.

What it is

Manual lymph drainage (MLD) is a very gentle, hands-on technique that works with your lymphatic system, the network of vessels and nodes that carries excess fluid away from your tissues and back into circulation.

Unlike a deep-tissue massage, MLD uses light, slow, rhythmic strokes that gently stretch the skin in the direction lymph naturally flows. The lymph vessels that do most of this work sit just beneath the skin, so a light touch is what makes the technique effective, and most people find it deeply relaxing.

How it can help

  • Encourages the natural flow of lymph fluid
  • Can help reduce swelling and puffiness
  • May ease feelings of heaviness or tightness in swollen areas
  • Helps you move with greater ease and comfort
  • Often used to support recovery after surgery or injury, with your doctor's okay
  • The slow, rhythmic touch is calming for many people

What to expect

Your visit starts with a conversation about your goals and health history. During the session you'll rest comfortably while your therapist uses slow, light movements, often beginning near the neck and working toward the areas that need attention.

Afterward, drink plenty of water. Some people need to use the restroom more often following a session, which is normal.

Good to know

Please tell us before your visit if you have a current infection, a blood clot or a history of clots, heart or kidney problems, or are being treated for cancer. In these situations MLD may need to be adjusted, or cleared by your doctor first. If you've recently had surgery, ask your surgeon when it's safe to begin.
